Teaching Technology to Children

When we want to learn new software, we turn to Lynda.com and their phenomenal online training videos. We've been amazed by how much we learn quickly and affordably with the Lynda.com services.  Imagine having access to thousands of well organized, complete training courses for any software you need to learn. Now envision this level of service being offered at an affordable price and you'll start to understand why we love using this resource in our business and homeschool.

My children have successfully used Lynda.com to learn important skills.  They are currently in Jr. High and Lynda.com gives them the ability to learn software, skills and gain ideas for projects they are interested in completing.  They've watched tutorials on using Microsoft Word and implemented skills learned.  Our daughter has learned Photoshop skills and also is learning to use Illustrator.  She's 10.  I asked her to recreate a digital header for one of my sites. My graphic designer had created a header similar to the one shown below, but I needed it re-sized for a new application.  Since I didn't have the original file, I emailed the image to my daughter and sent her the graphic of the boy.  I asked her to match the color and fonts and create the image with set dimensions. She did all the coloring, layout, and layering in Photoshop independently.  I was impressed! See her work sample below.

Thanks to Lynda.com technology is a part of our homeschool and the kids are learning critical computer skills that will equip them to be successful in the digital world.  They are also actively participating in our family business with their growing talents. I love it!

Learning Software Independently in Homeschools

I first discovered Lynda.com when I needed to learn to use InDesign to do the layout for a Spanish curriculum I wrote.  I spent 30 hours watching Lynda.com videos and then proceeded to successfully create a layout for my 250+ page curriculum.  I was so excited to have the ability to do this task independently and easily thanks to the amazing step-by-step training I received at Lynda.com.  I have gone on to learn to more effectively use Excel and Word as well as numerous Adobe programs including Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver.  Recently I've been researching Open Source (free software) and learning to use content management systems such as Joomla. I am always impressed by how much I can learn and put to immediate use through the Lynda.com video training program.  I am absolutely a fan for life and I want to ensure that homeschool families hear about this great resource.
